If your window has started dropping, jamming or won't shut properly, the hinges are the usual culprit. Window hinges — especially on uPVC windows — wear out over years of opening and closing, and once they go, the sash drops and the window stops sealing. Here's what replacing them costs and whether you can do it yourself.

Signs your window hinges have failed

  • The window drops on one side when you open it.
  • It's stiff or judders as it opens and closes.
  • It won't shut or seal properly at the top or bottom corner.
  • There's a draught even when the window's closed.
  • The corner of the sash scrapes the frame.

What window hinge replacement costs

Prices are typical UK figures, not a quote.

JobTypical price
Replace a hinge pair (independent)from £75
Replace a hinge pair (specialist firm)from £145
Hinge repair or re-alignment (minor)often less than a full pair

A couple of things move the price:

  • How many hinges — windows have one or two pairs; you'll usually replace both sides of a sash together.
  • The hinge type — standard friction stays are common and cheap; tilt-and-turn or concealed hinges cost more.
  • Access — an easy-to-reach ground-floor window is quicker than an upstairs one.

Most hinge replacements are done the same visit and don't require touching the glass or the frame.

Can you replace window hinges yourself?

It's possible, but fiddly:

  • You need to match the make and length of the existing hinge exactly, or the window won't sit right.
  • The sash has to come out — heavy on larger windows, and a two-person job upstairs.
  • If the alignment is off afterwards, the window still won't seal.

If you're confident with a drill and have a second pair of hands, a standard friction-stay swap is doable. If the window is large, upstairs, or tilt-and-turn, it's cheaper in the long run to get a professional to do it right first time.
